In Veliky Novgorod archaeologists during excavations found part of the wall of the Church of St. John the Baptist, built in the XIV century, and a fragment of the ancient streets.

As reported by the Novgorod state Museum-reserve, the discovery was made in the historical part of the city in the area between Ilyina, Mikhailova, Nochnoy and the Moscow streets. Scientists believe that this discovery will help to find the German courtyard – a medieval representation of the Hanseatic merchants, the exact location of which is unknown.

Found the Church of St. John the Baptist is mentioned in the Novgorod Chronicles as times in connection with the German yard. The Church was pulled down, presumably to the end of the XVIII century, and in its place was erected the building of a new quarter.

In the 1990s the Institute of archaeology RAS found the South aisle of the Church of St. John the Baptist, attached to the XVI century. With the new discovery has the opportunity to tie the approximate outline of the temple plan of the whole quarter.

last year, the administration of Veliky Novgorod gave the area where they found the Church, the Museum to create a historical architectural quarter.

In late July, the archaeologists have completed excavations on the site of the Church of Boris and Gleb in Novgorod Kremlin. The most valuable find was the wall of the ancient temple of XII century, according to the Institute of archaeology RAS.
