Prices are currently rising almost everywhere. So it can be worth saving even in small places. For example with water. But who makes the price race: self-fizzed from the SodaStream or the purchased mineral water? We did the math for you.

SodaStream has been launching new sparkling water makers on a regular basis for years. The manufacturer advertises with a variety of advantages: You not only save yourself the hassle of lugging around annoying carriers, but also do something good for the environment. According to SodaStream, the bubbler saves around 2,000 bottles and cans a year.

But what about the costs? Can investing in a SodaStream really save you money in the long run? To do this, we compared the one-off and ongoing costs for new CO2 cylinders with the annual costs for mineral water. In addition to the test winner rated “very good” by Stiftung Warentest, we also used a branded water rated “good” and a discounter water for comparison.

With our CHIP colleagues: mineral water in the test overview

According to the German Society for Nutrition, the recommended daily requirement for water for a two-person household (between 25 and 50 years old) is 2.82 liters per day. This corresponds to a water supply of 1,029.30 liters per year. With a SodaStream, that’s about 17 CO2 cylinders. At SodaStream itself, a new quick-connect cylinder costs a whopping 30 euros. In our calculation, however, we assume the classic “exchange procedure”. Customers can exchange empty CO2 cylinders for a full CO2 bottle at supermarket, discounter or drugstore checkouts for around 10 euros.

In the following table we clearly show the annual costs with a SodaStream model compared to conventionally purchased water:

The result shows: If you want sparkling water, the SodaStream Duo (read the detailed test report) is definitely worth it to save money in the long term. Already in the year of purchase you save with the sparkling water maker compared to expensive brands or the water test winner from Stiftung Warentest. However, if you rely on cheap discounter water, you will get cheaper in a direct comparison with the bottles you buy. However, time and effort are not included here, nor is the fuel, which may become more expensive, if you drive to buy water by car.

You can save a lot if you get hold of the SodaStream Duo on offer. The water bubbler is currently available from Amazon in a set with four bottles (2x PET and 2x glass) and a CO2 cylinder for only 105 euros (to the shop). You usually count over 20 euros more here and currently save around 17 percent when making a purchase.
