Earlier, Girkin told the British newspaper The Times that he feels "moral responsibility" for the death of passengers of flight MH17 that crashed in Eastern Ukraine in 2014.
Passenger Boeing 777 company "Malaysian airlines", carrying out flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur that crashed on 17 July 2014 in Donetsk region, in the crash killed 298 people – citizens of ten countries. In June of 2019, experts stated that it had established a group of four persons suspected of involvement in the incident. They are accused that they allegedly took delivery of anti-aircraft "Beech", which was shot down Boeing in Ukraine with Russia.
The trial began on 9 March in the Netherlands. With Girkin are another three people, his subordinates Sergey Dubinsky, Oleg Pulatov and Leonid Kharchenko. According to the investigation, Girkin, Dubinsky and Pulatov have Russian citizenship, and Kharchenko is Ukrainian. Pulatova interests in court are represented by a group of Russian and two Dutch lawyers, the trial of other defendants held in absentia.
