the Scientists of the Paleontological Institute (PIN) RAS, and the Novosibirsk Institute of petroleum Geology and Geophysics (ipgg) SB RAS found in the Altai a new species of fossil bryozoans. They are older than 450 million years.
As told in the press service of the ipgg SB RAS, the find was made in the area of lake Teletskoye. The age of the rocks in which the fossil was discovered, were determined for complexes of trilobites and brachiopods. According to scientists, it is 458,4 to 453 million years.
a New species of bryozoans was named in honor of the region of detection – Dianulites altaicus. The preservation of paleontological remains has identified some of the biotic characteristics of the habitat resources. In particular, in the colonies identified in vivo damage caused by the organisms that lived next to the Bryozoa.
colonies of Bryozoa from the Altai, the species have a spherical shape, the samples are in the PIN wounds, where they are the most detailed studied by specialists. The researchers compared them with more ancient samples of the same kind found on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago and Vaygach island. According to the estimates of paleontologists, some samples from the territory of the Arctic is actually close to the “Altai” to bryozoans, although previously they were classified as another type.
Probably, bryozoans Dianulites altaicus dwelt not only in the sea of the Ordovician period on the territory of Altai, but also in the Arctic alemarah, and possibly in the Paleozoic paleiskwartier in China. Experts intend to continue the study of ancient bryozoans in the South of Siberia and in the Arctic regions of the country. This year has already planned new geological expedition.
