The Fort is located in County Armagh and is one of the five Royal capitals of historic provinces of ancient Ireland. It is part of the so-called Navan complex, which includes Fort Haughey, Stables of the king and the lake Lugnasad and consists of an embankment in the shape of a hill.
Scientists from several institutions conducted on the territory of the complex geophysical studies, which resulted in the discovery of large-scale ceremonial temple complex. It is the opinion of scientists was used until the middle ages. This complex was opened in the sixties and until now it was thought that the buildings were residential chambers of the kings.
According to Patrick Gleason from Queen’s University Belfast, this temple complex is one of the largest and most complex ritual structure pre-Roman period in Northern Europe.
The complex is described in Irish mythology, according to which the Fort was the residence of the king of Ulster Conchobar Mac Nessa.
