The German Parliament passed a law which prescribes punishment in the form of a monetary fine and even imprisonment for the desecration of the symbols of the European Union and flags of other countries.
The reason for the adoption of the law was the incident when in 2017 in Berlin, the demonstrators burned the flags of Israel, Deutsche Welle reports.
“it is Impossible that in Germany, burned Israeli flags,” – said the expert on legal policy of the SPD faction in the Bundestag Johannes Fechner.
In turn, the Minister of justice of Germany Christine Lambrecht said that the burning of flags in public areas has nothing to do with peaceful protest, such actions only incite hatred, rage and aggression.
Previously, the fine or imprisonment was only for insulting the state symbols of Germany.
Against the adoption of the law made by the deputies of the faction right populist party “Alternative for Germany” (ADH), because, in their opinion, such a ban constitutes an “undue interference in freedom of opinion and art.” The motion was rejected by a majority of votes.
