At a secondary school in Essen, several students developed circulatory problems after drinking an unknown liquid. First, a student had to be taken to the hospital around noon, as the Essen fire department announced in the evening. An hour later, the rescue workers were alerted again because four students between the ages of twelve and 14 complained of circulatory problems. Two of them lost consciousness. The four were also taken to the hospital.
During surveys at the school, it turned out that all five of those affected had drunk from a 1.5-liter plastic bottle. Three other students probably did the same; they had been picked up by their parents with similar complaints before the fire brigade was first called. The families were reportedly contacted with a recommendation to take the youths to the hospital.
The fire service examined the contents of the bottle but were unable to identify it with their gauges. The bottle was therefore taken to a special laboratory at the Dortmund fire brigade for further testing.
