In the Danish Parliament protested the new U.S. plans to provide economic assistance to Greenland, considering it a provocation. It is reported by Altinget.
U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Carl Sands wrote in his article that the US government is preparing a substantial package of financial support that will help to give impetus to economic growth in Greenland. She explained the need for this aggressive behavior of Russia, its militarization of the Arctic, as well as “predatory economic interests” of China in the region.
This American proposal has caused strong outrage in the Danish Parliament, and some members of Parliament described it as an extremely provocative intervention. So, a member of the foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament Karsten Hong, said that the United States is clearly “crossed the line” with this proposal, which may lead to disagreements with their allies.
In December 2019, the Danish Ambassador to Russia Carsten Sondergaard said that his country considers a closed question the possible sale of Greenland USA. In his words, “turned the head”. The diplomat noted that the President of the United States Donald trump has expressed such an interest, as it understands the growing importance of the Arctic.
In August last year it was reported that trump is considering the purchase of Greenland. This idea was discussed with his advisers, who found the plan economically viable. Later, the American leader confirmed the interest in purchasing the island and compared the possible purchase of the large transaction on acquisition of real estate.
Washington has also said it is ready to pay every year the Danish subsidies under the purchase and Greenland in the amount of $ 600 million. Later it became known about the US plans to open on the island, the Consulate of the country.
The Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen refused to discuss the sale of autonomy.
“Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is not a Danish. Greenland Greenland. I very much hope that it [the desire of the President of the United States to buy the island] is nothing serious,” she said.
After that, trump has canceled a planned visit to Denmark.
