Former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder wants to remain a member of the SPD despite the party expulsion proceedings against him. “I have never voted for anything other than SPD in my political life,” said the 78-year-old to “Spiegel” (Friday). “That will also be the case in the future, even if one or the other from the SPD leadership is making it a bit difficult for me at the moment.”
Exclusion proceedings against the former chancellor are currently pending at the SPD in Hanover. But he looks at it “with composure,” said Schröder. “I am and will remain a social democrat.” Several associations have requested that Schröder be thrown out of the party because of his many years of work for Russian energy companies and his closeness to Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to “Spiegel”, the responsible arbitration commission has called for a hearing in the week after next.
