Prices are not only rising in supermarkets and discount stores. Restaurants have also tightened the price screw. After soy, meat and fish dishes or fries have already become more expensive, landlords and operators are now turning to drinks. FOCUS Online says what you need to know.
In Munich, the “Wiener Schnitzel” with a small salad and fried potatoes has been costing over 28 euros for a few weeks now. In November, guests only paid 22 euros for this. Not an isolated case!
There are also hefty surcharges for fries, soy dishes, meat or salads. Recently there have also been adjustments to the drinks.
It is no secret! Restaurant operators, innkeepers and canteens make a large part of their sales with the drinks menu.
Wine, orange juice, coffee and soft drinks are now more expensive than ever in restaurants. The background is that catering establishments use it to cover the rising energy, lease, food and personnel costs. On average, consumers have to pay between 40 and 60 cents more for their drinks than in November 2021. This makes going to the pub an expensive affair.
Energy prices are climbing and the ancillary costs continue to rise. What can be done about it? Are insulation and photovoltaics worth it? Find out the answers and much more at FOCUS Online’s big real estate day on July 4th. GET YOUR FREE TICKET HERE!
The white wine spritzer is available in many places for well over seven euros, soft drinks for over four euros and juices for over five euros per glass. The development in mineral water is particularly strong.
In some cases, hosts call for prices of up to eight euros for the 0.75 liter bottle. The 0.25 liter bottles cost over four euros. With the same money, visitors can buy a whole crate of mineral water in the beverage market – including a deposit.

Tap water also costs money in many places. First establishments only serve tap water with slices of ginger, lemon and cucumber. Guests should then pay EUR 1.50 per glass for the special vital water from the tap.
At the request of FOCUS Online, hosts from Munich confirm that the first breweries have already announced further price adjustments for the fall. The price of beer for a 0.5 liter glass could rise to five euros. Two years ago, the average price was 3.50 euros. Strong and Altbier would also be affected.
The first companies had even reduced the size of the beer glass. Instead of 0.5 liters, many hosts now serve 0.4 or 0.35 liters. Despite the smaller quantity, the price did not change.
Restaurants and bars always have a good price mix of expensive and cheaper drinks on their menus. Expensive drink prices are often high. A bottle of wine for 80 euros or champagne for 300 euros is not ordered that often, but it is still prominently featured on the food and drink menu.
There is a simple trick behind it. High-priced drinks act as a deterrent for guests, who look for cheaper alternatives. A bottle of mineral water for eight euros, a Coca-Cola for 4.50 euros or a coffee for five euros seem cheap in this price environment, even though the prices are extortionate.
FOCUS Online advises: Ignore the high-priced premium drinks. So you always have an objective view of the drinks menu.
Basically, if you want to save, you should reduce visits to the restaurant. A family of three pays on average from 120 euros upwards in the evening (without the lunch menu offer) with a starter, main course, ice cream and two drinks each.
When you visit a restaurant, you should not only think about what you want to drink, but also what the price is worth. For example, pay attention to the words “small glass” and “large glass”. When it comes to juices, you can often save up to 40 percent if you grab a large glass.
Smaller quantities of drinks are only worthwhile in exceptional cases. Compared to the large glass, they are much more expensive and are drunk faster. For example, if a small bottle of mineral water (0.25 litres) costs around EUR 3.70 and a large bottle (0.75 litres) EUR 7.80, it is more worthwhile to reach for the large bottle. If you want to save, you can use the bottle of water throughout the evening.
You get a lot cheaper than if you order two cola glasses or a white wine spritzer with a soft drink.
If you are drinking wine in a larger group in the restaurant, it is more worthwhile to order the expensive wine bottle than individual glasses. Compare glass and bottle prices. For orientation: A bottle of wine usually makes up to six wine glasses.
If the company only offers small drinks glasses, speak to the employee directly. Ask if you could have your desired drink in a large glass at a smaller price. In many cases, the price is reduced by 30 percent. However, this trick does not work for drinks that contain spirits – for example cocktails.
