“I want fun” singer Markus Mörl suffered for years from a rare nervous disease called trigeminal neuralgia. Despite the slim chance of recovery, the 62-year-old never gave up hope. An operation on his head freed him from the pain.

It was already announced in 2014 that NDW star Markus Mörl was suffering from a rare nervous disease. “bild.de” he reported: “I’ve had trigeminal neuralgia for several years, a very rare condition in which lightning-like pain chases you through your facial nerves out of nowhere. Like a drill going into your head. The disease used to be known as a suicide disease because people killed themselves when they could no longer bear the pain.” Now the musician, who has been on stage for over 40 years, speaks of his healing.

“Time has passed far too quickly. I love life, maybe I’m also a professional optimist. But I think life has always been very nice to me,” said the “I want fun” singer recently to the tabloid. But that didn’t always seem so, only a specialist from the Mainz University Hospital brought Markus Mörl the hoped-for chance of healing

In 2019, the doctor advised an operation, to which Markus Mörl says: “It lasted six hours. It entered my head from the back, then veered into my spinal cord. There, the nerve cord was covered with a Teflon layer so that the veins could no longer trigger the stimulus. When I woke up the pain was gone and never came back. I now have a hundred percent more zest for life.”

Now the NDW singer can look more calmly at the course of the nervous disease: “It started harmlessly with a toothache. I went from dentist to dentist for two years. […] The pain only got worse and worse. I had fits where I fell out of my feet in the middle of the pedestrian zone and was suddenly on the ground.”

When the diagnosis finally came, Markus Mörl’s pain became more bearable: “I was put on medication and given the strongest painkillers. The pills dampened the autonomic nervous system.” And he continues with relief: “The operation was certainly life-saving for me. I wasn’t ready to take my own life yet. But if it had gotten worse, who knows , which I would have been capable of.”
