The German handball players want to advertise their sport at the World Cup in Poland and Sweden. “It’s a great opportunity for us to spread the sport, to spark and increase enthusiasm,” said sports director Axel Kromer before the opening game of the DHB selection against Asian champions Qatar this Friday (6 p.m. / ZDF and Sportdeutschland.tv).
One wants to achieve that handball “is an issue when buying bread rolls at the bakery in the morning and that people were excited in front of the television the night before,” said Kromer. With good performances, the team also wants to “ensure a new inflow into the clubs,” added the 46-year-old. However, sustainability must be achieved locally, “even if the sporting success of the national team is a major building block”.
The DHB selection has been waiting for a medal at major tournaments since the 2016 Olympic bronze medal. The last entry into a semi-final for the time being was at the home World Cup in 2019. Next year Germany will host the European Championship.
