Several Canadians are vying for the Golden Globes on Sunday night, including blockbuster actor Ryan Gosling and independent filmmaker Céline Song.
London, Ontario-born Ryan Gosling is nominated for his supporting actor role as Ken in the summer hit Barbie, and Hamilton’s Martin Short is up for best actor in a musical or comedy television series for his character as a crime documentary podcast host in the series Only Murders in the Building.
Ms. Song’s debut feature film, Past Lives, is shortlisted in five categories, including best drama film, best director and best screenplay.
The Canadian-Korean filmmaker’s relationship drama is partly based on Ms. Song’s own life and tells the story of two childhood sweethearts who reflect on the nature of their relationship after living separate lives for 24 years.
All the Light We Cannot See, directed by Montrealer Shawn Levy, is also nominated in the category of best miniseries, anthology or TV film.
Meanwhile, Toronto musician Robbie Robertson, who died aged 80 last year, is nominated for best original score for his work on Killers of the Flower Moon.
Hosted by comedian Jo Koy, the 81st Golden Globe Awards is the first major broadcast of the awards season and will air on CBS and Citytv in Canada at 8 p.m. Eastern.
The Golden Globes are attempting to make a comeback after its former broadcast partner NBC pulled out of the 2022 show amid controversy over the lack of diversity among nominees and within its own jury. Industry pressure led to the dissolution of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association last summer.
