The tank discount has been valid in Germany for more than 15 days. Motorists should actually be able to save 35 cents on petrol and 17 cents on diesel. But the tank discount fizzled out. Now a graphic shows that the measure takes effect for the first time at the pump.
If drivers take May 31st as the deadline, the tank discount should mean that super now costs 1.85 euros per liter and diesel around 1.89 euros per liter. After all, the average price for Super as of May 31 was 2.20 euros per liter and 2.06 euros for a liter of diesel.
But gas stations are a long way from these values. On Friday morning, drivers paid an average of EUR 1.97 for each liter of petrol (E5) and EUR 2.02 for a liter of diesel at the approximately 15,000 filling stations in Germany.
Converted, the tank discount for petrol thus shrinks to 23 cents (instead of 35 cents). With diesel, it even fizzles out completely. Drivers save only 4 cents instead of the 17 cents stipulated by the government.
But there are also signs that the tank discount is now taking effect.

An evaluation available to FOCUS Online shows that prices at German gas stations have been gradually declining since last week.
In the first week of June, the prices for diesel and petrol rose by up to 10 cents per liter. On June 9, petrol fell for the first time across the board. Almost 6,500 petrol stations and thus almost 44 percent of the petrol stations in Germany have reduced the liter price of E5 and E10 by up to 10 cents. Only about 950 petrol stations went up in price.
On June 14, for the first time since the introduction of the tank discount, the liter of diesel became cheaper across the board. Almost 22 percent of the filling stations in Germany reduced the diesel price by up to ten cents. 15 percent increased the price by up to 10 cents.
According to the “Clever-Tanken” and “TankenTanken.de” apps, there are now first gas stations that are charging a diesel price of less than 2 euros per liter. In the case of petrol, the price per liter of petrol has fallen to 1.89 euros per liter in some regions. This is the case on Friday mornings in Fulda, Erfurt, Mannheim or Augsburg.
At the start of the tank discount, experts had complained that operators had to sell the fuel from May at the old purchase price. They would therefore set higher prices in the first weeks of June and then slowly withdraw the tank discount. This effect is now evident.
There is no right answer. The price situation is currently very dynamic. If you find petrol stations that sell petrol for less than 1.90 euros per liter, you should fill up.
If this value is not fallen below, you should decide depending on the use. If you need to use the car more frequently in the next few tanks, you should fill up the tank. If you only drive occasionally, fill up for 30 or 40 euros. FOCUS Online also advises: If the price of petrol falls below 1.85 euros, you should fill up immediately. It will probably not be cheaper in the next two weeks.
With diesel, a liter price of less than 1.95 euros (under the current conditions) is “cheap”. In such a case: fill up. A liter price for diesel of more than 2.05 euros is usury. Ideally, avoid the gas station here.
Compare fuel prices in your area. Apps that you install on your smartphone can help. Well-known providers are ADAC, Mehr Tanken, Clever Tanken or Bertha. Google Maps also lists the current fuel prices for many German cities.
Use discount codes, coupons or customer cards – you can save with them.
HEM filling stations cooperate with the Clever-Tanken-App and offer a “low price guarantee”. If motorists find a cheaper petrol station from another provider nearby, they always pay the cheapest price per liter for diesel and petrol.
In every Agip filling station, ADAC members fill up for one cent per liter cheaper. After refueling, simply show your membership card at the checkout and save.
Customers can collect points at Aral and Esso. Aral has Payback points and Esso Germany Card points. After a certain number of points, credit coupons can be issued that drivers can use when filling up.
If you have to travel long distances, avoid motorway service stations and use exits into surrounding small towns. Ideally, this results in savings of up to 8 cents per liter.
