Researchers across Europe are warning that Europe could be facing a Corona fall. For this reason, the EU health authority ECDC and the EU drug authority EMA are putting pressure on vaccinations. Persons over 60 years of age should take care of a second booster vaccination.

In view of a new wave of corona in Europe, leading EU authorities believe it makes sense to allow people over the age of 60 and patients with certain previous illnesses to receive a further booster vaccination against Covid-19.

However, this is a suggestion. The competent vaccination commissions of the member states must issue a recommendation. In Germany, this is the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) based in Berlin. The 18-strong panel of experts is part of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

According to current studies, the protection against infection against the omicron virus variant disappears within a few months after the first booster vaccination. A severe course can represent an increased risk for certain groups of people, which is why a second booster vaccination is recommended. This should give those affected better protection.

For Germany, the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) has so far only recommended a second booster for people over the age of 70 and some other groups, including people with suppressed immune systems, nursing home residents and staff of medical facilities.

According to current information, 7.3 percent of the population in Germany have received a second booster vaccination.

The few vaccination centers that still exist in Germany could, under certain circumstances, turn away people who want to be vaccinated and want to have boosters for the second time. This could happen, for example, if those wanting to be vaccinated are under the age of 70 and do not fall under the current Stiko recommendation (of May 20).

Anyone who, according to Stiko, is eligible for a fourth vaccination can also contact the vaccination centers directly and be vaccinated there.

EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides has urged member state governments to immediately offer a second booster vaccine to anyone over 60 and anyone else who is vulnerable. “There is no time to waste,” she insisted. She appealed to the citizens to take advantage of the vaccination offers.

“As case numbers and hospitalizations increase as the summer period begins, I urge everyone to get vaccinated and boosted as soon as possible,” she said.

Municipalities, municipalities and cities have gradually dismantled vaccination centers since May. In Munich, corresponding contracts with companies even expired completely. Employees were terminated without notice, as FOCUS Online learned.

FOCUS Online therefore advises: Get in touch with your general practitioner and discuss whether a second booster vaccination is an option for you.

It is true that the first point of contact for the fourth vaccination remains the family doctor’s or general practitioner’s practice.

Basically yes. Contact your GP practice.

A distinction is now made between “basic immunization” and “boosted” during vaccination.

Those who are basic immunized, i.e. have only received two vaccinations, lose their status after nine months (270 days).

People who have been boosted (i.e. with a third vaccination) are considered “boosted” indefinitely.

Those who have recovered lose their immune status within the European Union six months or 180 days (6 months) after the positive test result.

You can see when your status expires using our calculator, which you can find here:

In principle, those who are willing to be vaccinated and who have already received a first booster vaccination have a high level of protection against a severe course of corona disease.

In some cases, however, it can still happen that after the first booster vaccination there is a vaccine breakthrough, which in some cases leads to a severe course. Read more about this here.
