Odoev – one of the oldest towns of North-Eastern Russia. First mentioned in the Novgorod chronicle in 1380, in connection with the battle of Kulikovo.
the city was Founded even earlier, in the middle of the XIV century, Novosil Prince Roman, who, fleeing from the Tatars, went to live in Odoev and founded a dynasty of feudal princes Odoevsky. Located at the crossroads of Lithuania and the Russian possessions, Odoev not once became the arena of military actions and passed from hand to hand. In the XVI-XVII centuries the city played an important role in border fortress on the southern borders of the Moscow state and was part of the defensive line Big defense line. Strengthening line Ryazan – Tula – Odoev was considered the most reliable site. The city was mentioned in the “watch” 1645 – then, on the orders of Moscow examined and described in detail all the fortifications included in the defense line. In 1777, the town became a district.
Today, of the fortifications Odoevskogo settlement remained only the earthen shaft. But still a good view of the city on the high Bank of the river UPA. And slightly to one side, surrounded by ancient poplars, visible estate of the hero of the war of 1812, General Mirković.

In recent years, the city attracts guests with festival clay toys “Tales of a grandfather Philemon”, which annually attracts dozens of collectors and fans of Handicrafts. The fact that eight kilometers from Odoev is one of the oldest pottery and toy centers in Russia, whose origins date back to the Neolithic Nobel culture. Here the clay was mined and, in addition to a variety of dishes, sculpted the famous filimonovskaya toy. These fun noisemakers are doing masters and today, and the products themselves, both ancient and modern, and related to the legends show at the Museum of filimonovo toys.
In Odoev – truly a Museum city. And not only that this historic village, which carefully preserve the authenticity of buildings and structures – there are five thousand inhabitants five museums. In addition to the interesting local history, where the exhibits are allowed to touch, there is a Museum of Soviet industrial toys “childhood”. As told “RG” the founder of “toy” exhibitions, Sergey Kuznetsov, has opened a gallery odoevskoe-Belevsky lace where you can learn the craft. Odoevskaya earth, despite the distance from all seas, is considered the “sea” here because the birthplace of many famous explorers of the North. Their names are marked on all geographic maps of the world – is Alexei Chirikov, Aleksey Skuratov, Semyon Chelyuskin, the first woman in the world – the Arctic Explorer Tatiana Pronchishchev and many others.
