NEW YORK, CBSNewYork — A prescription eye drop has been approved by the FDA to improve close-up vision.
CBS2’s Dr. Max Gomez reported that it could be a life-changing medication. Most people will experience blurry and close-up vision in their 40s.
Toni Wright lives a dual life on her farm in Western Pennsylvania. She checks on her cows and chickens, but she also works from home as an internet retail consultant.
Wright said, “I have readers all over the world.”
This is the only way Wright (54 years old) can see things up close.
Wright stated, “I was in denial because that to me was a sign I was growing older.”
Wright was told by her doctor about eye drops that could temporarily correct her close-up vision in 2019.
Wright stated that he would not use his readers as often, particularly on the computer where they would be required.
Wright was among 750 people who participated in a clinical trial that tested Vuity, an FDA-approved eyedrop to treat presbyopia (age-related blurry and near vision).
“Vuity uses the eye’s natural ability reduce its pupil size,” stated Dr. George Waring. He was the principal investigator of the trial. “Reducing the pupil size increases the depth or depth of focus and allows you to focus at different ranges naturally.”
A drop in each eye will give you sharper vision for 6-10 hours.
Vuity spokesperson said that the medication will cost approximately $80 for a 30 day supply. It is most effective for people between the ages of 40 and 55. The side effects of the trial were headaches and redness in the eyes for three months.
Wright stated, “It’s definitely life changing…just a convenience to be able to put the drops in and be able to go.”
Prescription drops can be used for mild to moderate cases, but they are less effective after the age of 65.
Because the pupil is narrowed, the drops can reduce the amount light entering the eye.
