FC Bayern let the next player go free of charge. On Monday, the record champions announced that Corentin Tolisso would leave the club in the summer after his contract expired at the end of June. It is still unclear where he is going.
Trainer Julian Nagelsmann would obviously have liked to hold Tolisso, as he now reveals in an interview with “L’Équipe”. An extension failed due to the veto of the bosses. For them, a new contract was not an issue because of the Frenchman’s susceptibility to injury, who also struggled with various injuries in the past season and only played 22 times in all competitions.
“There is the opinion of the coach, but there is also the opinion of those responsible. We didn’t play the best possible season,” says the 2018 world champion: “I don’t think the coach had enough influence in this context to say that I want to keep this player. And I understand that decision.”
Unlike Niklas Süle, who will also leave the club in the summer after his contract expires and join Borussia Dortmund, there was no official farewell for Tolisso in the last home game against VfB Stuttgart (2-2). The reason was that his future had not yet been finally clarified at that time.
“We had agreed with those responsible that I would not receive a bouquet of flowers like Süle in the last game. I didn’t know FC Bayern’s decision yet,” said Tolisso. He then “didn’t hear anything from the bosses for three weeks, I asked my agent to call them and the decision was made.”
According to a report by “Bild”, those responsible for the record champions have even considered offering Tolisso a strongly performance-related contract. The idea was quickly off the table again, as the midfield reservist is said to have demanded a whopping salary increase from six to seven million euros to a total of eleven million euros.
Instead, Säbener Straße prefers to accept the fifth free transfer within a year. Last year, David Alaba, Jérôme Boateng and Javi Martínez left the club after the end of their contract, and now two more are joining them in Süle and Tolisso.
But that’s not all: As is well known, the contracts of Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry will also expire in the coming year, and the same scenario threatens them.
With his statements at a press conference in Poland, Robert Lewandowski made it clear that he wants to leave FC Bayern this summer. Those responsible for the record champions have only one choice: they have to give up the Poles. A comment.
