Today, may 15, marks the international day of families, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993. Sometimes it is simply called “family Day”, though in Russia this phrase stuck also the Day of family, love and fidelity celebrated in July.
the Occasion is intended to emphasize that the family is the basic unit of society – this view is shared by the United Nations. At the same time, like many other established UN holidays: international day of families is used in order to raise awareness about issues that affect families directly or indirectly.
In many countries on may 15 to hold a variety of themed concerts, sporting events and other events in the festival. On a more “official” level seminars, conferences, radio and television broadcasts, and educational activities on the importance of family and providing for them a comfortable environment.
Every year since 1996, the United Nations announces a new “subject” family Day, thereby paying attention to a particular problem. In 1996, the focus was on poverty and homelessness, and subsequently, attention was paid to issues such as ageing, disability of family members, the role of fathers and mothers, gender equality and children, the need for a healthy lifestyle, the impact of migration and more.
this year, the theme is worded as follows: “the Role of family in development: the Copenhagen Declaration and the Beijing platform for action”. Both documents referred to were adopted 25 years ago and are related to social issues. The UN website also mentions that pandemic facing humanity, serves as a reminder of the importance of development and strengthening of the social sector to protect the most vulnerable families. At the same time, emphasizes the importance of families as the center of interaction between generations.
By the way, the United Nations emphasized that they support the holding in various countries and “national” days of the family because it also provides an opportunity to discuss important issues.
