Is this the next public broadcasting scandal? According to a report, the technology director of Bayerischer Rundfunk, Birgit Spanner-Ulmer, has two personal drivers – and two company vehicles at that.
The expenses affair surrounding the resigned RBB director Patricia Schlesinger has still not been completely clarified, so the next scandal in public broadcasting is apparently already looming. As the “Bild” newspaper claims to have learned, the technical director of Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR), Birgit Spanner-Ulmer, is said to have two chauffeurs and two company vehicles.
A second driver is therefore available if the first is ill or on vacation, according to the report. Both drivers are therefore also available for private trips.
Apparently, an Audi A7 is used for these trips. Alternatively, according to the report, there is a second car, a Ford Mondeo station wagon. “For business trips, the directors can use an in-house driver,” said a BR spokesman for the newspaper. And further: “The exception here is Ms. Spanner-Ulmer, who uses two drivers alternately and, according to the service contract, can also use them for private trips.” The reason for this is that as technical director she has to be on the road in the entire transmission area.
A driver earns around 50,000 euros per year at BR. With two drivers, that makes 100,000 euros per year. Spanner-Ulmer also receives a salary of around 266,000 euros per year.
