The head of the Austrian oil company OMV Rainer Seele has offered to give a “political response” to US threats to impose sanctions against companies involved in the construction of the pipeline “Nord stream 2”. This writes the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
Seele said he expects that steps will be taken to ensure that Europe has lost its attractiveness as a place to invest. He added that the question is whether Europe is prepared to defend its sovereignty and independence, especially in matters of energy supply.
In late June, green said that thinking about timing of completion of the construction of “Nord stream-2” is premature, some estimates can be given only after the introduction of new sanctions by the USA and reaction to them in Europe.
The gas pipeline “Nord stream-2” from Russia to Germany under the Baltic sea was supposed to start in late 2019. The project launch date was postponed to the turn of the 2020-2021 years, first because of the position of Denmark, which did not coordinate the route of the project through their water and then because of the U.S. sanctions against companies involved in the project. In July 2020, the U.S. House of representatives voted for the amendment that will expand restrictions against the project.
