Since the draw on Friday, March 25, 2022, there is now a second draw per week on Tuesday. The jackpot rolls from one event to the next throughout the week. This means that the jackpot increases with every draw, unless the first prize category is hit – from Friday to Tuesday, from Tuesday to Friday and so on. The maximum jackpot amount increases from 90 million euros to 120 million euros.
1:96 million – this is how the mathematician Norbert Herrmann puts the probability of hitting the euro jackpot. Extremely unlikely, that’s clear – but also difficult to grasp, such a number. “Every human being has an average of 100,000 hairs. Imagine you had to choose a hair from 100 people. And that hair would have to be drawn in the lottery machine. It’s so unlikely.”
The mathematician gives another example: women’s tights have an average of two million stitches. With 47 women with pantyhose, you have to decide which stitch you want to use – and then you have to pull it. Herrmann himself has not yet succeeded in doing so. “That’s the joke of the lottery,” he says. “Each tip is equally likely. A shrewd mathematician has no advantages either.”
Because a particularly large number of players try their luck at the Eurojackpot in Germany, there are often million winners here, according to Westlotto. In 2016, for example, a player from Baden-Württemberg won 90 million for the first time – at that time the highest win in German lottery history. This German record was set again in January 2021. The Eurojackpot, filled with a maximum of 90 million euros, went to North Rhine-Westphalia. Most recently, in February 2020, a player from Münsterland and in May an individual winner from Bavaria secured a prize of over 90 million euros.
The chance of winning the Eurojackpot is 1 in 95 million. The chances of winning the classic lottery on Wednesday and Saturday (“6 out of 49”) are significantly lower. Here, the chance of winning the jackpot is only 1 in 140 million.
The player ticks five out of 50 numbers and two out of twelve numbers in each field, making a total of seven numbers. A game costs two euros, plus the processing fee. If you get all seven numbers right, you can count on the main prize. In twelve prize categories, however, there are also more smaller prizes than in the eight in the classic lottery.
Participants can also bring their tip to the acceptance point in the traditional way by Friday. Important: The acceptance deadline varies between federal states:

The biggest jackpot win of the year went to Finland in February 2018. A syndicate received 90 million euros. That was a national record – never before had there been such a high lottery win in Finland.
The highest German million win of the year comes from July 2018. After a jackpot phase of 15 consecutive draws, seven of which were long draws with the maximum amount of 90 million euros, two German players from Hesse and Saxony-Anhalt shared the jackpot and received it 45 million euros each.
Unlike the traditional German game Lotto 6 aus 49, players from 18 European countries can play with the Eurojackpot. In order to crack the jackpot, 5 out of 50 and 2 out of 10 numbers must be typed correctly. According to Westlotto, the statistical probability of doing this is 1 in 95 million – for the second prize category around 1 in 6 million.
The Eurojackpot is a relatively new lottery and promises warm euro rain: ten million every week, a maximum of even 90 million.
The countries Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, Italy, Iceland, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, the Czech Republic and Hungary participate in the Eurojackpot. They offer a lottery substitute that lures with significantly higher odds of winning, a guaranteed weekly first prize of ten million euros and a jackpot of 90 million – twice as much as the highest payout of “6 out of 49”.
