Karl Lauterbach has now announced how he imagines corona protection in the fall. The measures of the new Infection Protection Act have been initiated. How useful are they? How well prepared are we for the cold season? The plan in the epidemiologist check.

Health Minister Karl Lauterbach sees Germany as “well prepared” for the fall. Proposals for the new Infection Protection Act (IfSG) are on the table.

These should be the nationwide measures:

Shortly after it became known, there was both encouragement and criticism from different quarters. “If, for example, the obligation to wear a mask should be differentiated according to whether the last vaccination was three or four months ago, then I wonder how that should work in everyday life,” said the chairman of the General Practitioners’ Association, Ulrich Weigelt, of the “Rheinische Post”.

Virologist Hendrik Streeck warned that Germany could turn into a patchwork quilt given different measures depending on the federal state. In order to avoid this, clear guidelines are needed for the federal states as to when these measures, such as compulsory masks in schools, should be taken, Streeck told the Welt television station on Wednesday.

Ralf Reintjes, epidemiologist at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, evaluates the individual measures for FOCUS Online:

Ralf Reintjes is Professor of Epidemiology and Health Reporting at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. His focus is on the investigation of infectious diseases, expertise in surveillance and pandemic preparedness at national and international level (especially Europe, Asia and Africa).

Epidemiologist check: The Hamburg epidemiologist rates all of these points as useful. In practice, however, many questions and potential gaps remain unanswered. The measures are to apply from October 1, 2022 to April 7, 2023. Next, the cabinet will deal with the proposals, and then it will be up to the Bundestag.

Reintjes concludes: “An end to the measures at the beginning of April is very optimistic. In recent years, the rate of infection has been very high.” Time will tell how the optimistic recommendations will affect society.
