Cowboys of Color Rodeo Honors Diverse Heritage on MLK Day

FORT WORTH, Texas – On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Cowboys of Color Rodeo made a resounding statement at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo. This event, the largest multicultural rodeo globally, brought together over 200 culturally diverse athletes to showcase their talents and celebrate their heritage in a thrilling competition.

Preserving Tradition and Culture Through Rodeo

Among the participants was Pat Hooper, a second-generation cowboy from Athens, Texas, who competed in the steer wrestling competition. For Hooper, this event is not just about showcasing athletic prowess but also about preserving the Western lifestyle and heritage that has shaped generations of cowboys and cowgirls.

“In today’s society, a lot of it has been forgotten,” Hooper expressed. “If we can get one day out of the year to amplify the contributions we’ve had as Black cowboys, I think it’s a great deal I can contribute to for future generations to come.”

Shining a Light on Black Cowboys

Chase Pierre, a standout in the steer wrestling competition, emphasized the significance of events like the Cowboys of Color Rodeo in shining a light on the often-overlooked contributions of Black cowboys. Winning first place in his category, Pierre highlighted the dedication and seriousness with which Black cowboys approach their craft.

“It’s shining a light on Black cowboys, where we come from, what we really are,” Pierre remarked. “I hope people actually see what we do and how serious we take this.”
