AUSTIN – Have you ever paid for parking in Austin only to receive a citation shortly after? According to city transportation officials, mistakes can happen, but there are ways to resolve them. Joseph Al-Hajeri, the parking enterprise division manager at Austin Transportation and Public Works, mentioned that if a wrongfully issued citation occurs, they are willing to dismiss it and provide the necessary resources to help.
The addition of paid on-street parking along South Congress Avenue was established after the Austin City Council created a parking and transportation management district (PTMD) in March 2023. This change, which began in September, aims to encourage short-term parking for drivers visiting the entertainment and shopping district. Al-Hajeri emphasized the importance of managing street parking to incentivize the use of off-street garages and lots for longer stays.
Although generating revenue from paid parking is not the main objective, the funds collected are reinvested into the community through various improvement projects like sidewalks, lighting, and street fixtures. Additionally, the revenue helps in hiring more enforcement staff to monitor parking and bike lanes, as well as assisting with city events.
If you receive an incorrect parking citation after paying for parking, you can contest it by submitting a customer service request to Austin 3-1-1, emailing ATDEnforcement@austintexas.gov or Parking@austintexas.gov, or by appealing the citation at Austin Municipal Court. In a recent case highlighted by KXAN, a spokesperson from Austin Transportation and Public Works confirmed that an incorrect citation was dismissed.
Al-Hajeri emphasized that the parking system is customer service-oriented, and they strive to provide the best service possible to the public to ensure a seamless experience as they navigate through the city’s mobility system.
