The quality of service areas in Germany differs greatly from state to state. The Autoclub Europa found out exactly that in a large test – some rest stops completely failed.
There are around 13,000 kilometers of autobahns in Germany. There are around 440 serviced and 1,500 unserviced rest stops along these routes for regular breaks – the latter do not have a particularly good reputation.
Dirty or no toilets at all, garbage in nature or dangerous traffic situations are the reasons for this. The Autoclub Europa examined the condition of such rest areas with the help of over 700 volunteers and summarized the results in an overview:
The comprehensive PDF of the service area check breaks down state by state which of the service areas tested performed well and which failed completely.
The maps in the PDF show how the federal states have performed in areas such as road safety, family friendliness, accessibility as well as cleanliness and hygiene – but only at rest stops that even have a toilet.
In some categories, the new federal states perform significantly better. When it comes to cleanliness, there is a need for improvement, especially in Bremen and Rhineland-Palatinate. Nationwide, rest areas without a toilet fare worse than those with a toilet.
