The Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office is alerting local businesses about a recent increase in fraudulent transactions occurring at hardware stores in the area. Specifically, these fraudulent activities are targeting stores that sell steel, flooring, and other construction materials.
According to reports received by the BCSO, victims who live outside of Bastrop County have noticed unauthorized charges on their credit and debit cards. The modus operandi involves employees accepting payments over the phone and requesting a copy of the customer’s driver’s license. The scammers then provide images of fake IDs to make substantial purchases using the stolen financial information.
To combat these fraudulent activities, the BCSO advises against making large purchases over the phone. Instead, opt for in-person payment verification to ensure that the transaction is legitimate. This simple precaution can help prevent falling victim to these scams.
If you suspect that you have been a victim of a fraudulent transaction or if you have any concerns or questions regarding this issue, do not hesitate to reach out to BCSO investigator Mark Garcia at 512-549-5086.
