Davin Herbrüggen won the talent show DSDS in 2019. The 23-year-old must have melted many a woman’s heart back then, and not just because of his vocal performances. But what was not known at the time: Davin is homosexual. He spoke about it now with “bild.de”.
Three years have passed since his victory, which made him known to an audience of millions. A lot has happened in the life of Davin Herbrüggen during this time. And he finally decided to come out. That would have been unthinkable for him in 2019, as he says in an interview.
“Especially during the DSDS time, I didn’t say anything when I was in public for the first time. I was suddenly standing in front of an audience of millions. That was definitely a challenge for me. As a newly trained geriatric nurse, I was in this big casting show. I asked myself more than once how to deal with it. What happens when people notice that? I was really scared of how people would react.” He carried his secret around with him for a long time – he knew from childhood that he liked boys, as he says. But it wasn’t until he was 19 that he confided in his mother. Her reaction: “She said that it’s nice when I fall in love. The main thing is that I’m happy.”
His duet “Je t’aime'” with colleague Sharon Trovato finally showed him that the time had come for his outing outside of family and closest friends: “Because it shouldn’t matter who or what you love. The main thing is to love,” says Davin. And Sharon also encouraged him to take this step: “It’s time for me to free myself from what I’ve really been carrying with me all my life and have kept secret for years.”
Davin Herbrüggen even has great news for his fans: he is engaged! “We moved in together three weeks ago. I’m overjoyed and really won the jackpot with him,” he enthuses in an interview. But he wants to keep him out of the public eye for the time being. Musically, he has turned to hits in recent years and recorded his first album “Aus meine Seele”.
