As reported by the BBC Sport website, the team had previously called for “stricter gun laws” in a letter to Congress after several mass shootings had taken place in the country in recent weeks.
The US House of Representatives is expected to vote on a gun control bill in the coming days. US head coach Gregg Berhalter (formerly a player at Energie Cottbus, among others) said he was “very proud” of his team.
“Sometimes it’s easy to get trapped in our little world and forget what’s going on outside, but this group didn’t do that,” said the coach.
In the letter, which was signed by players and staff, the team called on Congress to “stand with the majority of Americans who support tougher gun laws.” “As athletes who are privileged to represent the greatest country on earth, we are often asked how such horrific gun violence can occur in a place like the United States,” the letter reads.
