The TV broadcaster RTL has just announced: After two decades, the casting program “Deutschland sucht den Superstar” should end in 2023. Why there are several reasons to doubt that – and possibly everything is made dependent on the pop titan.
Supposedly that should be the end of it, after 20 years of DSDS, the anniversary season is the last of its kind. Never again will the iconic blue and white logo with the microphone flicker across the screen for longer than almost any other on German television. A prankster who suspects that it could be a tasteless marketing ploy. Just like total clearance at XXXL Lutz. Or the last price on eBay classifieds. If the first episodes only manage anywhere near a double-digit TV rating, the next season will be bagged before we can spell “bet-that-revival” or “the-price-is-hot-is-coming-back”. Everything at RTL wanted to be new and colourful.
Florian Silbereisen danced flowery and folksy in a figurative sense holding hands with Toby Gad and Ilse de Lange in the primetime ringlets through the past season. Again and again he grabbed the Steirische Quetschn himself, sang along at the top of his lungs, told amusing private stories that were still unknown about his lucky red underpants, which he wears at every performance. Crushes about ex-girlfriend Helene Fischer were not neglected either. But there was one thing he couldn’t and shouldn’t do: expose the candidates with nasty comments. The RTL viewer apparently missed that, the season tore the all-time low ratings. In Mallorca, Dieter Bohlen is in a good mood on social media before he returns to TV. Because he has the final confirmation: There can only be one head of the jury at DSDS. And he is.
The new family television on RTL, finally campfire atmosphere in front of the TV again. The riot station, which has provided us with guaranteed ratings for years with loud, visually strong, sometimes spitefully smug content, suddenly becomes nice and a good bit quieter. In the announcement in autumn 2021, the Cologne cuddle course seemed equally surprising for industry insiders and viewers. Unusually diverse, sustainable, constructive, this is how Deutz wanted to lead Germany’s largest private broadcaster into the future. Sure, the dwindling advertisers in linear TV demand quality television. The content should be politically correct and positive across the board. They certainly are at one point or another in the program. But do the viewers want to see that at 8:15 p.m.? The anniversary season will tell.
