Celebrating Progress: LGBTQ Veterans’ Concerns About Trump’s Reversal

Donald Trump’s reelection has LGBTQ veterans across the nation concerned about the potential rollback of hard-fought rights. In the wake of the election, a Veterans Day ceremony in San Diego reignited fears and rallied a community accustomed to battling for their rights.

San Diego Wall of Honor Induction

During the ceremony, seven veterans were inducted into the San Diego LGBT Center’s Wall of Honor, a tribute to veterans’ courage, bravery, and sacrifices. The event, reminiscent of traditional Veterans Day ceremonies, featured a Navy color guard, the singing of the national anthem, and veterans sharing stories of service and sacrifice.

Personal Stories of Struggle and Triumph

Army veteran Robert Granat, reflecting on his induction, expressed surprise and humility at being recognized. Despite being drafted into the Army Reserves in 1969, Granat navigated the complexities of serving while concealing his sexuality to avoid career repercussions.

Another inductee, Pele Crone, proudly served as an openly lesbian soldier in the Army. While she faced sexism within the ranks, Crone remained unapologetically true to herself, refusing to be silenced or marginalized.

Challenges and Advocacy Ahead

Over the years, LGBTQ individuals faced discrimination and exclusion from military service until the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell in 2011. However, concerns arise with President-elect Trump’s stance on military inclusivity, as well as potential setbacks under his administration.

California Democratic Congresswoman Sarah Jacobs reassured the LGBTQ veteran community of her commitment to defending their rights and preserving the progress made in recent years.

As the Biden Administration works to rectify past injustices, veterans like Randye Hedgecoke, discharged under discriminatory policies, find hope in initiatives to restore their honor and recognition for their service.

Together, these stories shed light on the resilience and determination of LGBTQ veterans, underscoring the ongoing challenges they face and the importance of advocacy and support in safeguarding their rights and contributions.
