In accidents on Autobahn 6 on the border between Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, one man died and seven people were seriously injured. According to the police, a 57-year-old had strayed off the road towards Nuremberg with his truck on the Bavarian side near Schnelldorf early Monday morning and broke through the central barrier for an initially unknown reason. The truck collided with an oncoming car and crashed into a refrigerated truck. The 50-year-old driver suffered such serious injuries that he died on the spot.
A police spokesman said his 47-year-old wife in the front passenger seat and his child were seriously injured – without giving any further details. The two truck drivers and their passengers also suffered serious injuries. The 42-year-old driver of the refrigerated truck was reportedly trapped. All came to hospitals. Rescue and police helicopters as well as emergency chaplains were used, among other things.
As a result of the accident, a traffic jam formed, the end of which a driver near Satteldorf on the Baden-Württemberg side apparently noticed too late. According to initial findings by the police, about two hours after the original accident, he crashed unchecked into a trailer truck that was standing at the end of a traffic jam. Rescue workers had to free the 24-year-old from the wreck, officials said. A helicopter flew the seriously injured to a clinic.
The police closed the highway in both directions for the rescue work. These dragged on into the afternoon.
