Franziska Giffey warns that refugees are overtaxing Berlin’s capacities. The Governing Mayor says these are “almost exhausted”. She has received broad support for her call for federal support.

Berlin’s governing mayor, Franziska Giffey (SPD), has warned that the high number of refugees will not overwhelm Berlin. “We city states in particular, and especially Berlin as the main attraction, have now almost exhausted our capacities,” said Giffey of “Bild am Sonntag”.

340,000 Ukrainians received first aid in Berlin, and 100,000 are now resident in the capital. “We urgently need more federal real estate to accommodate people well, financial support for the immense costs and fair distribution throughout Germany,” Giffey continued.

“Finally, not only resolutions are needed, but concrete measures,” demands Gerd Landsberg, general manager of the German Association of Towns and Municipalities. “The accommodation options are limited,” warns Landsberg in the BamS. “Hotel rooms are already being rented and collective accommodation, for example in gyms, is being prepared.”

Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) also demanded in BILD am SONNTAG: “The federal government must finally support the financing of the accommodation. The municipalities are at their limit, without the promised support they will soon no longer be able to act.”

According to information from the newspaper, the federal police are currently detecting around 400 unauthorized entries at all German borders with a focus on the German-Czech and German-Austrian land borders.
