Senior representatives of the British intelligence service MI6 held talks with representatives of the terrorist movement “Taliban” (banned in the Russian Federation). This is reported by The Telegraph with reference to sources.
It is noted that in this way the British authorities wanted to achieve guarantees that Afghanistan would not be used for terrorist attacks on the West. According to the newspaper, negotiations with the Taliban took place for two weeks: as a rule, they were handled by the British who were at the British Embassy in Kabul. In addition, bilateral contacts were held in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
According to a source of The Telegraph, the British special services are afraid that the Taliban will use Afghanistan as a” base ” for hiding terrorists planning attacks on the West. “This is what we are most afraid of,” the source said.
At the same time, MI6 did not answer journalists ‘ questions about whether such negotiations actually took place.
At the end of August, it was reported that representatives of the American CIA also arrived for talks with the Taliban — in particular, the head of the department, William Burns, met with one of the leaders and head of the political office of the radical movement. According to The Washington Post, the meeting was held on August 23 in Kabul and was the first talks held at such a high level between representatives of the United States and the Taliban after the militants seized power in Afghanistan. The CIA declined to comment on the meeting, however, most likely, the parties discussed issues related to the evacuation of American citizens from the United States.
The Taliban denied reports of a meeting between representatives of the movement and the CIA. US President Joe Biden declined to comment on this information.
