DeMarr Langford had 19 points and Quinten Post added 17. Boston College, fifth-seeded Wake Forest was defeated by Quinten Post 82-77 in overtime during the second round Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.
The Eagles (7-14), who were trailing by 10 points with six minutes remaining in regulation, rallied and scored the first six overtime points to win.
This is BC’s first win in two tournament games since 2018. However, there were some challenges.
Earl Grant, a BC coach, said that “We have a lot endurance.” We talked about how a giant will come up against you if you climb up the hill. It was hard, but we did it together.
Jake LaRavia had 21 points. Alondes Williams was named ACC player-of-the year 17 times, and Dallas Walton scored 10. Monsanto added 12 on four 3-pointers to give the Demon Deacons (23-9), which are awaiting NCAA Tournament selection Sunday. There is no guarantee that they will be able to bid for an at large bid.
Steve Forbes, Wake Forest coach, said that he won’t be watching any Wake Forest games in the coming days. Instead, he will focus on the Demon Deacons prospects and try to track their progress.
Forbes was recently named ACC coach-of-the-year. Forbes stated that “I believe we’re one the best 68 team in the country for certain but I’m still not in the room.” “The narrative has not been very positive for our league, so I’m not counting on it.”
He said, “If you look at our efficiency in offense and defense we’re one the best teams in the country.” The problem is that they’ll try to find things that aren’t good. Beauty is all in the eyes of the beholder. We are about to discover if there are 68 better teams than us.
Brevin Galloway of BC hit a 3-pointer with 2:35 remaining in regulation to end a tie and cap a 14-1 run. As he drove to the hoops at the end regulation, he missed a hard layup against two defenders.
Jaeden Zachery made a 3-pointer in overtime. Makai Ashton Langford added a floater, and Zachery added a free throw. With 1:20 remaining, Williams scored a basket to cut BC’s lead to three. However, a Langford jumper as well as two Galloway free throws gave BC a seven point advantage with 27 seconds to play. Damari Monsanto made a 40-foot 3 pointer, but Zachery missed his free throw with 7.5 seconds left. The Deacons’ court-length inbounds pass was ruled out of bounds by Zachery.
BC lost by 30 to the Demon Deacons in the regular season. Now, it will face Miami. Miami beat the Eagles 81 to 70 on March 2. Grant believes that the Eagles are a completely different team from the one that struggled in regular season.
It’s your core. Grant stated, “It’s something we talk and practice and something that you do.” The inner parts of us show up when we get children to believe that this is what we are. We saw all the struggles this year: overtime losses, really tough losses, and hard wins. (The effort was a culmination of everything that we saw).
Ashton-Langford had 13 points, Zachery 12, and Galloway 11, respectively, for the Eagles. They shot 50% and made 24 out of 34 free throws.
The Eagles led for almost the entire first half, and the majority of the first minutes of the second before they were beaten by a field goal drought lasting over eight minutes. They were able to make 12 of 13 free shots during the shooting slump that kept them in contention.
