The German Tennis Association (DTB) has big plans for the venerable Hamburg Rothenbaum. The ATP 500 tournament is to become a masters on grass and take place between the Grand Slam tournaments in Wimbledon and Paris.
Masters in Hamburg: There should be another ATP Masters tournament at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum – i.e. the level directly below the Grand Slam. According to a report by “Tennismagazin”, the surface should also be changed from sand to grass. Corresponding plans are available from the German Tennis Association. The project runs under the title “Vision One”.
Soon a construction site in Hamburg? A Masters on grass in Hamburg would result in extensive conversions: six grass pitches, a covered Court 1 and a field of at least 56 players are basic requirements. The tournament could be held between the Grand Slams in Paris and Wimbledon.
Other cities are also being discussed: According to the report, the DTB is also negotiating with Fortuna Düsseldorf about the possible organization of a “Masters 1000 event”. 15 million euros in additional income from the global TV pool alone could be expected. However, both could only be realized in 2025. The DTB license cannot be changed beforehand.
