Joe and Gina Deich, childhood friends from New York, found their way back to each other in 2021 and fell in love. Their journey to marriage was not without its challenges, as both faced serious health issues along the way.
After years of staying in touch, Joe and Gina reconnected and their bond grew even stronger. Gina was dealing with medical problems when they reunited, and Joe was there for her every step of the way. However, their roles reversed when Joe, who had a history of heart problems dating back to 1994, had his own health scare and needed a heart pump in December.
Their wedding day took an unexpected turn when Joe had to be rushed to the emergency room in the morning due to spitting up blood. Despite the scary situation, the couple decided to seize the moment and tie the knot right there in the hospital room. With the help of the Heart Hospital of Austin staff, an impromptu wedding ceremony was arranged with flowers, wedding decorations, and an officiant. Two staff members even stepped in as maids of honor for the couple.
Following the emergency wedding, Joe was diagnosed with a GI bleed and had to spend a few weeks in the hospital. Once he was cleared by the doctors, the couple embarked on their honeymoon in Texas before heading to North Carolina for their first trip as a married couple.
Their story serves as a reminder to always prioritize your health, get tested regularly, and listen to your body. Joe and Gina are now advocates for heart health and are participating in the 2024 Austin Heart and Stroke Walk to raise funds for heart research and promote heart-healthy lifestyle programs. The event, taking place at the Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park, aims to raise $900,000 for the American Heart Association. Donations can be made online to support this important cause.
The Deichs’ journey from a hospital room wedding to advocating for heart health is a testament to the power of love, resilience, and the importance of taking care of oneself. Their message resonates with anyone facing health challenges and serves as a beacon of hope for those in similar situations.
