Portuguese archaeologists during excavations in the complex Perdigon, found the remains of an ancient monumental structures of wood. Scientists call it a wooden Stonehenge or Woodhenge.
Scientists believe that this was a huge construction of wood, from which to have survived only a base with a diameter of 20 meters. According to them, it was a ritual structure that is designed to resemble such as are found only in Central Europe and the British Isles, such as Stonehenge.
This design is located in the center of the complex Perdigo and clearly forms the megalithic landscape, which extends to the hills of Monsaraz located to the East of it. According to researchers, the entrance to this structure is oriented on the summer solstice, which indicates its cosmological nature.
“This astronomical orientation of the entrance is common, and it emphasizes a close link between such monuments and the Neolithic view of the world,” says archaeologist Antonio Valera.
The whole set of Perdigo, as scientists believe, was used extensively in the prehistoric Pyrenees in the period between 3400 BC and 2000 BC
