The party’s vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Boris Johnson has begun in London. MPs from Johnson’s Conservative Party met on Monday to vote on the Prime Minister’s fate.
Voting is scheduled to last until 9 p.m. CEST, the result is expected about an hour after the end of the vote.
Johnson was recently heavily criticized in his own party because of the affair about parties at the seat of government during the corona lockdown. For a vote of no confidence to succeed, more than 50 percent of the 359 Tory MPs in the House of Commons must vote in favor of the move in a secret ballot.
In this case, the 57-year-old would be obliged to resign as party leader and thus indirectly also as prime minister. He should no longer stand for the subsequent election of the next prime minister. If, on the other hand, the vote of no confidence fails, according to internal party rules, no further votes of this kind will be possible for a year.
The number of requests from Tory MPs to call for a vote of no confidence was reached on Sunday. According to the party statutes, in order to obtain such a vote, at least 15 percent of Tory MPs must express their support in letters to the relevant Conservative committee.
