Left leader Janine Wissler wanted to travel to Ukraine with a delegation on August 18. In addition to visits to Kyiv and Lviv, the Babyn Yar Holocaust memorial was also on the itinerary. When asked by “Spiegel”, a spokeswoman said that the five-day trip had been “cancelled at short notice” after the travel destinations and travel period were publicly announced by the press. Before that, an article in the “Junge Welt” – a newspaper close to the pro-Russian Sahra Wagenknecht – wrote about the specific travel destinations of the delegation.

“At the same time, it’s also about the safety of our partner organizations on site,” said the spokeswoman and continued: “Our foreign office and events with our partners have been the target of right-wing extremist attacks several times in recent years.”

Schubert expressed severe criticism in the “taz” after internal plans became public: “Here the security interests of our local partners and the participants were played with.” Renner also did not name a specific name, but indicates the clear intention of the article: “Whoever leaked this had an interest in sabotaging the trip.”

Wissler wanted to travel to the war-torn country together with experts from the Rosa-Luxemburg-Foundation, the members of the Bundestag Martina Renner and Anke Domscheit-Berg as well as the Berlin state chairwoman Katina Schubert.
