Finance Minister Christian Lindner is confronted with special requests from the ministries costing around 100 billion euros. The Handelsblatt reported on Tuesday, citing government circles. The dispute over billions should cause conflicts in the traffic light.
The negotiations on the 2023 budget are proving difficult due to the high number of additional requests from the ministries. Compared to the key points decided by the federal cabinet in March, the new demands of the ministries add up to more than 25 billion euros, reported the “Handelsblatt” from government circles.
There are also new wishes for the Energy and Climate Fund (EKF), a special fund in the federal budget with which the traffic light coalition wants to finance its climate spending in the coming years. According to the information, additional expenditures of around 72 billion euros are required by 2026.
The traffic light coalition is thus heading towards a conflict in the negotiations on the 2023 budget. Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) wants to comply with the debt brake again from next year. He therefore does not want to fulfill the additional wishes of his ministerial colleagues to this extent. “The ongoing ministerial talks are more of a comforting nature,” says the Federal Ministry of Finance about the current budget negotiations. “Major concessions are not possible if the debt brake is to be adhered to and tax increases are ruled out.”
The cabinet will only decide on the 2023 budget on July 1, according to government circles. The referral was originally scheduled for June 22nd. SPD leader Saskia Esken summed up last week: “We will have to talk in the coalition about the debt brake or other ways of financing.”
