Today, 6 March (April 23, old style), celebrated the Day of St. George, which corresponds to a holiday called “St. George’s day” or “Saint Spring” in the folk calendar of the Slavs. Interestingly, this is the occasion with the saying “Here to you, grandmother, and Jurev day” linked quite indirectly.
the above saying applies to other holiday called “Yuri’s Day”, or “Yuri Autumn”, which is celebrated on November 26 (December 9) and stems from the fact that farmers in that day had the right to move from one landlord to another. According to legend, on the eve of this day in some provinces, landlords fluster peasants strong beer that they forgot or did not have time to exercise this right.
Yuri Springtime with this tradition was not related, however in ancient times it played a significant role. As Yuri Autumn, it is the day of veneration of St. George, which, according to canonical practice, martyred on this day in 303 (304) BC, during the Great persecution of Christians.
South Slavs believed Gergiev day the beginning of the second half of the year. For the Eastern Slavs it was the pastoral festival of the year, the first day of the cattle in the pasture. Among Radici associated with the holiday – swimming in the “Egor Rosa”, gathering herbs and festive amdeselassie fires.
