MOSCOW, 20 APR – RIA Novosti. Lexicographers have revised the vocabulary of the Oxford dictionary and introduced neologisms in the outbreak of coronavirus, reports The Guardian.
So, in the largest dictionary of the English language appeared such concepts as “social distance”, “self-isolation” and the abbreviation WFH (work from home – “work from home”).
He COVID-19 also included in the composition of new words definition: “acute respiratory disease in humans caused by a coronavirus that can lead to serious conditions and even death, especially in the elderly and in people with concomitant diseases”.
Lexicographers, like many others, are now working from home. They record changes due to pandemic and make suggestions for inclusion in the dictionary of certain words and expressions.
According to experts, now the coronavirus (or COVID-19) is predominant in the language, whereas the most commonly used in December was a “Brexit” and “impeachment”, and in January – the Koala, bushfire (destructive forest fires), “Iraqi”, “locusts” and “murder”.
