In the next few days will land a package from Japan in Denmark who might be able to save the people from dying of covid-19.
In the package there is the drug camostat mesylate, which may be obstructive for include the walk around in the body.
It tells Mads Fuglsang Kjølby, there associate professor on the Clinical Pharmacology department at the University of Aarhus, which is behind the research project together with associate professor at the infectious disease department Ole Schmeltz Søgaard.
“the Idea is that camostat mesylate, inhibits the viruspartiklernes ability to penetrate into the body’s cells. It means that you are likely to be able to put the speed down on include the way through the body,” says Mads Fuglsang Kjølby, and adds:
“Our hypothesis is that camostat can alleviate the course of the disease and make it shorter. If it mitigates the course, expect that we will have a decreased need for ilttilskud, we will see a reduced number of persons who will need intensive care and ventilator, and fewer patients who die of this disease.”
According to Mads Fuglsang Kjølby has received the final approvals to conduct the experiment, and one expects that the first patients can get the drug on Monday, in which 180 persons, who have symptoms of covid-19 and is tested positive will be offered to be able to participate in the experiment.
The 180 persons will be distributed to all the country’s hospitals.
Two-thirds of the patients will get the active substance, therefore, camostat mesylate, while one-third will get a non active substance, i.e. without the effect.
Neither the doctors nor the patients know who gets what, and the actual selection will be by random draw.
Those selected will then be required to take the pills three times a day for five days, after which you will analyze at the result, but expectations are that three to four months before one can finally conclude whether camostat mesylate has an effect on the coronavirussen.
We have previously tested camostat mesylate on, among other things, the SARS virus, that spread back in 2002. Here had the drug a effect.
And that is one of the reasons why there is optimism that the trace of the two researchers prior to the project, as they have been hastebevilget five million Danish kroner from the lundbeck foundation, so that they can carry out this experiment.
