Black History Month is a time to reflect on and honor the rich history, culture, and contributions of African Americans in the United States. Throughout February, communities in North Texas come together to celebrate Black heritage with a variety of events that showcase the resilience, creativity, and spirit of Black Americans. From art exhibits to film screenings, performances, and educational programs, there is something for everyone to participate in and learn from.
Exploring Black History in Dallas-Fort Worth
The Dallas-Fort Worth area is abuzz with activities and events that pay tribute to Black history. From jazz performances to art exhibits, here are some of the highlights taking place in and around the region:
On February 1st, various events will kick off the month-long celebration, including a Jazz and Blues performance by Rob Holbert at the North Oak Cliff Branch Library, a Black History Month Celebration Art Exhibit at the MLK Jr. Recreation Center in Denton, and an art exhibition titled “DREAMS 2025” at the Frisco Discovery Center.
As the month progresses, more exciting events are lined up, such as the Bandan Koro Experience at the North Oak Cliff Branch Library on February 6th and the “Behind Our Curtain” exhibit at the Plano African American Museum.
Empowering the Community Through Black History
Communities across Dallas-Fort Worth are coming together to celebrate and honor Black history through various engaging events and activities. From film screenings to cultural performances, here are some of the upcoming events you won’t want to miss:
On February 8th, the Opal Lawrence Historical Park will host a screening of “Cowboys of Color,” while the Cozby Library and Community Commons will hold a celebration titled “Shared Experiences & Shared History.” Additionally, the African American Museum of Dallas will host the Robert & Charmaine Price Heritage Bowl, showcasing the talents and achievements of the Black community.
Throughout the month, a range of events will take place, including the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo at the Fort Worth Stockyards, McKinney Black History Month Celebrations at various locations, and the African American Read-In 2025 at the African American Museum in Dallas.
As February comes to a close, the Texas Black Hall of Sports exhibit at the African American Museum of Dallas and the “I AM Black History” Summit at Dallas College’s Mountain View Campus will provide opportunities for reflection and celebration.
