Juvenile Arrested for ‘Swatting’ Incident at San Marcos High School
SAN MARCOS, Texas – A juvenile connected with a September “swatting” hoax at San Marcos High School was recently arrested in Washington state on terroristic threat and false report charges. The City of San Marcos revealed that the juvenile, apprehended on December 5 in Whitman County, Washington, is facing charges for similar “swatting” incidents across the nation.
The Swatting Incident
On September 24, approximately 150 emergency responders rushed to the high school campus following an anonymous call reporting an active shooting. The caller claimed there was an individual with a gun inside the school, and two gunshots were even heard during the call. Despite the call being deemed false, the emergency response was genuine, with over 150 personnel from various agencies swiftly arriving on the scene.
San Marcos Police Chief Stan Standridge expressed, “We know that many in our community, including parents and school staff, were shaken by the threat. We took this investigation seriously to bring our community peace of mind and ensure the safety of students and families.”
Investigation and Arrest
Detectives were able to link the juvenile to multiple false threats after obtaining search warrants to examine his cell phone and computers at his residence in Washington. Additionally, the suspect was found to be involved in a false report made towards a police department in Idaho.
As of Tuesday, the suspect remains in custody, and the City of San Marcos is coordinating his prosecution with the Hays County District Attorney’s Office. Furthermore, information gathered during the investigation has been shared with the FBI and other relevant agencies for further action.
