Winners Announced for Mariachi Extravaganza, Largest Student Competition in the U.S.
The 30th Annual Mariachi Extravaganza in San Antonio recently concluded, marking a momentous occasion for young mariachi enthusiasts across the nation. The event, known as the largest mariachi competition for students in the U.S., saw an array of talented individuals showcase their musical prowess and passion for this beloved genre.
The Grand Champion title was awarded to Lorraine Garza from Roma High School, standing out among the crowd with her exceptional performance. Additionally, Crystaly Leal secured the top spot in the middle school division, while Leylanie Rodriguez and Alexis Perez triumphed in the high school and college age categories, respectively. A total of 19 prizes, including monetary rewards, tuition assistance, and other gifts, were bestowed upon the deserving winners.
A Celebration of Culture and Talent
Over the course of three days, aspiring mariachi musicians from middle school to college age flocked to the Lila Cockrell Theatre along San Antonio’s picturesque River Walk. The venue buzzed with excitement as participants eagerly awaited performances by Mariachi Vargas, a renowned group in the mariachi world.
For 17-year-old Merari Uribe, a talented violinist and singer, the Extravaganza held a special significance. Having immersed herself in mariachi music since the age of 10, Uribe emphasized the transformative impact of participating in such events. Reflecting on her journey, she shared, “In middle school, as soon as they offered that program, I joined, and it prepared me for high school.”
Embracing Tradition and Heritage
Mariachi music, originating in Mexico, has flourished in the U.S. Southwest, becoming a cherished cultural tradition. In Texas, hundreds of schools offer mariachi programs, treating it as a revered art form akin to band or orchestra. Students like Uribe undergo rigorous training, learning to read music and master the distinctive mariachi style.
At the Mariachi Extravaganza, live performances take center stage, captivating audiences with soulful melodies and vibrant rhythms. The event also features invaluable workshops where students receive guidance from seasoned musicians like those from Mariachi Vargas. Uribe likened Mariachi Vargas to a contemporary icon, stating, “Mariachi Vargas to the mariachi world is like Taylor Swift for this new generation.”
Connecting Through Music
Beyond the music itself, mariachi serves as a powerful link to heritage and familial roots for many students. Diamante Balcazar, a senior at Harvard University and president of Mariachi Veritas, highlighted the profound impact of mariachi on his life. Recalling childhood memories of mariachi music playing during family gatherings, Balcazar emphasized the emotional resonance of this art form.
As students from across five states converged in San Antonio for the Extravaganza, their shared love for mariachi transcended geographical boundaries. For Balcazar and countless others, mariachi represents more than just music—it symbolizes a connection to the past and a celebration of cultural identity.
