During this election season, LGBTQ+ voters in North Texas have been vocal about their top priorities when it comes to voting. One of the major concerns for this community is the access to gender-affirming care for minors and abortion rights, both of which are effectively banned in Texas.

In Texas, along with more than a dozen other states, abortion is outlawed in almost all cases. Similarly, around two dozen states, including Texas, prohibit gender-affirming care for individuals under 18. Recently, State Attorney General Ken Paxton sued a North Texas doctor for allegedly providing hormone therapy to minors after the state’s ban went into effect on September 1, 2023.

While many major health associations support age-appropriate gender therapy for minors as a way to treat gender dysphoria, opponents argue against the use of puberty blockers and hormone therapy for children, stating that kids are too young to make life-changing decisions about their bodies.

Both abortion rights and trans rights have become significant topics in this year’s elections, both at the state and federal levels. LGBTQ+ voters in North Texas have shared their thoughts on these issues.

Mariana Teran from Fort Worth expressed her concerns about not having control over her body, especially when it comes to abortion and the health implications that may lead to needing one. Kate Kalivoda from Mansfield highlighted her interests in economic policies, as well as how candidates’ plans could impact personal freedoms like abortion rights. Jillian Moran, a transgender woman from Fort Worth, emphasized the importance of transgender rights and debunking the misinformation surrounding care for transgender individuals. Justin Galloway from Arlington, a gay male, discussed his evolving views on gender ideology and the transitioning of children, leading him to become more conservative on the issue.

The voices of LGBTQ+ voters in North Texas reflect a diverse range of concerns and perspectives on issues such as abortion rights and transgender rights. As these topics continue to be debated in elections, it is crucial for policymakers to listen to the needs and experiences of the LGBTQ+ community to create inclusive and equitable policies.
