According to recent polling data from UnidosUS and BSP Research, 57% of surveyed voters are most concerned about inflation and the high cost of living, while 41% are focused on jobs and the overall state of the economy.
Gary Segunda from BSP Research highlighted that concerns about food, basic necessities, housing, rent, and gas prices are at the forefront of Texan Hispanic voters’ minds. Census data reveals that over half of Hispanic households in the U.S. are facing cost burdens, with almost a third of their income going towards housing expenses.
Local voters shared their personal experiences and perspectives on the economic challenges they are facing. Sandra Lopez, the owner of All Gather Coffee in Mesquite, expressed how the rising costs of groceries, utilities, and other essentials have put a strain on her family’s finances. Similarly, Steve Bickle from Mesquite noted the significant price increases following supply chain disruptions during the pandemic.
Dorian Espinoza, a Marine Corps veteran in Carrollton, highlighted the burden of taxes on his income, emphasizing the need for a new economic plan to address the current inflationary pressures. Christian Llamas, a first-generation Latino voter, called for a broader discussion on long-term economic stability beyond just addressing immediate inflation concerns.
Umberto Gutierrez Vasquez, the owner of La Perla Restaurant in Dallas, emphasized the importance of lowering the prices of goods like chicken, beef, and sodas, which directly impact his business. He expressed his hope that the future administration would take steps to make essential items more affordable for small business owners like himself.
