Today on Texas Standard, we have a lineup of interesting stories that cover a range of topics affecting Texas and its residents.
First up, we have the latest legal battle over DACA in Texas, as the state attempts to end the program that has provided relief for young, undocumented immigrants since 2012. Julián Aguilar from The Texas Newsroom will be joining us to provide more details on this case.
Next, there’s a new development in the Birth-to-Five Head Start Program in Nueces County, with a nonprofit called Upbring set to take over from the county’s Community Action Agency. Katie Nickas from the Corpus Christi Caller-Times will be sharing the reasons behind this change and what it means for families involved.
In other news, three North Texas car dealerships are suing the Federal Trade Commission over claims of deceptive sales practices. KERA’s Toluwani Osibamowo will be reporting on this legal battle.
We also have a positive story to share – the decrease in homelessness in Dallas since 2021, attributed to a new approach focused on providing homes. KERA’s Christopher Connelly will be discussing the strategy that’s reshaping how the city addresses homelessness.
Additionally, we’ll be looking at the higher risk of cyber scams faced by Black and Latino consumers, as highlighted in the 2024 Consumer Cyber Readiness Report. Yael Grauer, program manager for Consumer Reports’ online Security Planner, will be breaking down the findings for us.
And finally, we have a special PBS program to explore the untold history of Latinos in the US, hosted by John Leguizamo and directed by Ben DeJesus. DeJesus will be joining us to talk about the inspiration behind the series and its impact.
